Darn, Apple Makes Some Neat Stuff

I owned my 12″ PowerBook G4 since the summer of 2005. I still own it, and it still works, sorta.

But the poor thing finally took one nose dive onto the floor too many. I was working at the kitchen table (coolest room in the house during this mid-90s, heat index in the 100s heat wave) when the black-and-tan dog went into a trashcan, cherry picking a tissue to tear up. I jumped up, snagged the power cord, and down went the PowerBook.

Now, the thing seemed fine, besides being perhaps slightly more irregularly shaped than before. But after working awhile longer, I noticed the power cable wasn’t charging the battery. ruh-roh. On a five year old laptop (with a four year old battery, gratis because of that recall once upon a time), this is not a good thing. I had grown accustomed to about 30 minutes per charge, and being permanently tethered to a wall outlet. I tried an old power cord that I had, and it still did nothing.

I may or may not now have a job which kind of requires the use of a computer. So I said “F it!”, broke down, and bought a new laptop. What a difference five years makes. I bought from the Apple refurbished store, as that was where I picked up the PowerBook, and I had no issues due to that fact. You can stand to save a few hundred dollars.

I went with the 13″ MacBook Pro, with a 2.4Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4gb of RAM, 250gb of hard drive space, the GeForce 320M graphics card, etcetera etcetera. I very nearly convinced myself to go to a 15″ with an Intel i5 processor and graphics card with dedicated memory, but considering that I’m coming from a 1.5Ghz PowerPC, I honestly don’t know at what point I could justify the increase in computer power. (Probably the first time I sit down to do some video editing, but oh well. Really. The job I may have now doesn’t pay well enough for the 13″ to begin with.)

I also strongly favor the smaller footprint of the 13″. One thing about the 12″ PowerBook was it’s small size, and comparisons between the two on that subject are about a zero sum game. The MacBook is distinctively wider (wider screen = clearly worth it!), but it is also slimmer, top-down. I also appreciate the fact that the metal casing is simplified (not “one piece” exactly I see now, the bottom is removable) so that when I do start dropping it, it will not get bent out of shape as easily as the PowerBook. I’ll need to take a photo or two of its current status so that the world can see what I mean here.

OSX 10.6 is clearly a step up from 10.4, and everything I’ve done so far has been without fault. Fedex shipped overnight and I only received it yesterday morning.

Now I need to work on getting all the programs and miscellaneous other things back up and working on the new computer. I believe that I was able to save 90% of everything that was on the old laptop, transferring files to my external 500gb hard drive on the last remaining charge. At some point I need to either take apart the PowerBook and try to discern the cause for why it won’t charge, or source yet another charger to determine if it’s just that at fault. Either way, for now it’s deader than a door nail and laying on the floor by my desk. I’ve been tripping on it.

One quibble? I forgot when ordering that the new Macs don’t even include a telephone jack anymore. This means my pathetic dial-up at home is definitely on the way out.

To be replaced with a highly expensive cell plan and Droid smartphone. Oops, cat out of the bag for the next post’s subject? Unsure at the moment whether I’ll be going with Verizon, Sprint, or another company. They all seem prohibitively expensive, but for all of the useful purposes that a new Droid phone will function as, it seems like I’ll finally need to break down and get shackled to a 2-year phone contract. At least we won’t need to pay NetZero $15 a month for the worst imaginable internet experience, ever. I pray that tethering will have at least some semblance of being quicker.

Till the next one, faithful readers. (Yes, I know you all just arrived here with random Google queries, it’s O-K.)

I Gots Bennies

I was hired full-time a week ago (I was a temp working for Kelly Services since March, which, by the way, sucks) and benefits went live yesterday, the first of June. Health, prescription, dental, vision – hell, complementary life insurance!

Woot!

Ever get excited to visit the dentist or doctor? Well, me neither, but at least I won’t be paying out of pocket from now on.

My Digital Life

Figured it was time to update the blog with some inane daily going-ons.

I’m currently trying to start freelance photographing for a local paper. (Will go into further detail if it goes anywhere.) I also want to start delivering their papers. Two easy ways to get into journalism without actually having to write anything.

But getting a job means tidying up my digital persona. Which means not bitching about having to write if I ever want a writing job.

I still have an alternate domain at surfingonarocket.com, which I’ll be putting to use shortly as a front page for me, myself. It’ll include links to my flickr (both my personal account and the new “professional-ish” account?), the blog, and – naturally – my resume. Which I’ve been working on lately.

Oh, it’ll be awesome. Just you wait.

Party on, Garth.

Want More? Read my 1st Paying Gig

I recently got an issue of Fuse in the mail. It was the second issue of the glossy colorful publication that’s essentially promotional material for Ithaca College. But who cares considering they offered money to reprint an article I had already written for the IC View (where I interned last spring).

If you get a chance, pick up a copy of the magazine. My article on Second Life was the cover story and the spread is very sharp! Only one mistake on the copy too.

And if you can, check the latest issue and the next two of IC View, for more goodness written by yours truly. (I can’t seem to find a website for the view, since it changed names.)

Bizzy

This Wednesday I went to orientation for my new job — clerking at the USPS. I started Thursday, and I haven’t had a whole lot of free time since then. I’m working every day up until my parents and I go to Chicago next week, for Lollapalooza. Including Sunday. Who would of thought?

Been putting in eight or nine hour days, and my job description basically includes everything except actually delivering the mail. It’s been a lot to take in, and I’m on my feet the entire time. I’ve been getting home anywhere from six to seven. Then I usually lay down till dinner; watch an hour of TV, or a movie; spend an hour online, checking my e-mail and this site; then it’s off to bed, exhausted.

Suffice to say, I don’t have a whole lot of time to blog. Earlier this week I even had two or three article ideas that I wanted to expand on. I don’t even remember them now, although one had to do with supporting progressive causes through everyday means. The idea for this came when I applied for a credit card from Working Assets. Ten cents from every transaction is given to a variety of causes that I support. This doesn’t sound like a lot, however they contribute millions of dollars each year this way. The same company also has similar schemes involving long distance and wireless phone plans. And these opportunities are all over the place — ways to support causes that you believe in. In the same way that you can avoid Wal-Mart and shop locally, you can also support fair, ethical companies and avoid the others.

If I had made this blurb into an article, I would have done a little research and found some more links. Made it more coherent, but I’m typing on a schedule, as I already noted. Dinner is ready, I need to eat. Can stay up a little later since Sunday is a short day, and I go in late. But then it’s back to the grindstone. Ugh.

Uneventful Summer

Since the last update, surprisingly little has happened, in my life and in the world. My passport finally arrived. So did my new license. My 21st birthday came and went, bought some tequila and ate some cheesecake. The operation on my wrist went well enough. Been playing a helluva lot Sims 2 since it arrived last Tuesday. Had a drug test; apparently I’ve lined up a job for the remainder of the summer.

I need to buy plane tickets. And… Then I’ll be on my way.

There’s been a few good CDs I’ve been listening to continuously. The new NIN, Weezer, Beck, White Stripes. It’s been a good summer music-wise.

At the moment I’m copying all necessary files off of my old computer, putting them onto CD-Rs. This is an incredible pain in my ass, but it’s a last-ditch effort to save them. I tried booting up the old PC tonight, and it freezes up as XP loads. Safe mode, nada. Eventually I had to hook up the hard drive to another PC we have, which doesn’t have a firewire port (which would of made transfering files a lot easier (understatement)). Then I couldn’t find my USB drive, although that would have taken even longer since it’s only a 128MB. So I’m reduced to using CD-Rs. I think I’m burning my 10th as I write this. Might run out.

We’ll see.

On Hiatus?

I’m starting to get use to the new Mac. Downloading a few SNES roms so that I’ll have something to do, since there are exactly 0 games made for Macs.

Still been wholly ignoring the news. Should probably keep up a little better, but it’s always so depressing. I want to relax a little during summer, fer chrissakes.

Might have a job lined up. And I’m still fooling around trying to get all the paperwork done for next fall. Want to fix the Saab soon. Probably going to just take it to our Saab mechanic, so he can go over it with a fine-tooth comb. Then maybe I’ll be able to convince my parents that we can take it out to Chicago this summer for Lollapalooza. It’d be great taking the Saab. Just need to make sure it’s mechanically tight beforehand.
