Life On The Edge

Today I skipped my first class, Deutsch 201. I’ve gone.. four times so far this semester. If I skip every fifth class, I should be OK. I think.

On Wednesday, I filleted my index finger with a large serrated knife. It hurt, and still does, but seems to be healing somewhat. Quite a bit of blood for a minute there.

This Sunday I go to another autocross, as some regular readers should know (the info is in the last post for chrissakes).

And I still need to write a post about my apartment.

Right now, I think I’ll update the design here.

Here I Sit…

… in the Ithaca College library, using my laptop and schmoozing off of their free wireless internet. I decided to upload the photos I took of my new apartment, and make a brief post on this blog.

I open up iPhoto, and – surprise! – it says that there’s no library, that I need to either find one or create one. Whoops! My collection of pictures for the program was one of the first things to go last night, when I deleted a bunch of stuff, trying to free up some hard drive space (I need an external drive for archiving some of this shit). The PowerBook has a 60GB drive (that for some reason only says 55.77GB), and last night I was bottoming out at ~200MB. After purging a lot of junk, I’m now back to 5.02GB of free space. But I should have left my iPhoto library.

So now I’ll have to go back and re-shoot everything (big deal). There will be a post about my apartment in a few days, which is exciting for everyone, I’m sure.

In other news, today is Wednesday, which means the first day of classes. I only had two today, but it was quite enough. German 201 at 10am, and then Grants, Proposals, & Reports at 11am. German is going to be arduous. The prof will be speaking in German the entire time, which oddly enough is more than I got in German class in Germany. The Grants is a writing class focused on writing – you guessed it – grant proposals asking for money. I imagine it will help when I’m in the streets panhandling. From first impressions, the writing will be tedious, there are too many students in the class, and the professor tries entirely too hard.

Perhaps my other four classes won’t be as bad. Pff.

When’s the next break?

More, Better, Prettier

I need to update the blog more often. I must make better posts, with more politics. I need to change the design to something prettier, more colorful, more “hip”.

First week of classes through, and it’s looking pretty good. I’m taking twelve credits: three writing classes and macroeconomics. I only have class on Tuesdays and Thursdays, which really makes everything manageable. Because the workload is going to be pretty hefty. A lot of writing, to be expected.

I did not place into German 202. I didn’t even make it into 201. After two semesters of 102, I still can not place out of it into a higher class. Ultimately this doesn’t matter, since next fall I can take 201 (which is only offered in the fall – I was trying to skip it, take 202 this spring semester, and be done with that “awful German language”). But it’s damn exasperating nonetheless. The politics major requires a foreign language taken up to the intermediate level. I’m reminded of when one of my advisors said that the only way around this, was if I had some sort of learning disability which precluded doing this.

I wish. I’m just damn lazy, and – in languages – you can’t just sail through. Or at least I can’t. Maybe I should bone up on the symptoms of a disability.

No. That’d be too much work.

I’m going to work on the design of the site, since it’s pretty drab right now. And I really need to get back into the swing of writing politics. I did not intend this to be a personal blog. I hate personal blogs.

Spending Money In Europe

Back in the spring, I knew what I needed to bring with me. All of the literature explicitly stated that we needed formal attire, for many of the field trips that we took to important EU institutions. I put off buying an outfit, right up until the drive down to NYC a few days before I flew out. We saw a promising store, stopped in, and bought a decent outfit. Except for the shoes.

I guess I thought they were kidding about the whole “formal attire” thing. Maybe they’d be lenient and let my creme-colored Pumas slide by. Turns out that they were pretty serious.

So I needed to buy shoes. At first I simply asked for a place to buy dress shoes. I checked out the recommended store, but they seemed to wholly stock designer names, at prices in the 100-plus euro range. A bit more than I wanted to pay. The second store I looked at was much more my speed. I found some dress shoes, on sale for 29 euro, and I even like them. I was truly fortunate. Oh, and the only time the whole language barrier came up, was at the end when I was checking out. The cashier asked me a question; I smiled, shook my head, and said “ja” uncertainly.

Why would a store ask whether or not you want the shoe box?

Yesterday, I ventured into a camera shop to get my digital camera cleaned (another thing that I could have done all summer, but put off). The woman working there spoke some English, but more importantly, was very nice about the whole not-understanding-each-other thing. It eventually worked out to 30 euro, and apparently they’ll call and let me know when to pick it up… Hopefully.

The hike in the Black Forest last Sunday would be told much better through photos than through text. However, I only had my film camera, and I don’t have easy access to a scanner. Suffice to say, it was a very beautiful hike. Lots of.. trees. Just use your imaginations, people.

Next, we go to the Alsace region, where we’ll tour a random castle, sample wine at a wineyard, and play tourist in a small French town. In approximately eight hours we leave. I need to catch some shut-eye. I’ll expand later, for now, make do with this half-ass, vague post.
