An Inconvenient Truth

I know that I’m late on the draw here, but I finally saw the ‘Al Gore Opus’ last week at a free showing on-campus. And Gore makes a convincing case. Only the most deluded will walk away still disbelieving humanity’s impact on global warming. Most impactful was the chart of CO2 stretching back 700,000 years. The movie creates a credible case and rebutes the critics in 100 minutes. And you learn a bit about Gore in the process. Which is.. Nice.

Mountain Patrol

Mountain Patrol (or Kekexili) is a 2004 Chinese / Hong Kong movie about a volunteer group that patrolled the Tibetan plains through the mid-’90s, protecting antelope from poachers. As expected, the view is amazing. The best thing here, however, is that it’s based on a true story – and one that many probably have never heard of.

The Man of the Year

No, this isn’t the 2006 Robin Williams craptacular. And it doesn’t have John Ritter either. This man of the year was O Homem do Ano originally, and it takes place in Brazil. Máiquel (Murilo Benício) is just a guy who lost a bet and had to dye his hair. The new look leads him on a life of crime, however, beginning with the murder of a punk named Suel who dared to insult the new ‘do. Surprisingly for Máiquel, the community (including as polícias) support his actions, which enables him to continue down the path of a hired gun / outlaw hero.
