2/11/2008 UPDATE: See The Great Tuno Campaign
So “tuno” was a soy product that looked, tasted, and even – to a certain extent – smelled like tuna. But it was soy and vegetarian. So my family and I enjoyed this wonderful product for many years, the health-food store in Saratoga being the only place locally that carried it. Then they stopped. Someone said that it wasn’t made anymore, but how could that be? It was such an amazing product! (We mostly made vegetarian tuna noodle casserole and tuna salad with it.)
Well my student organization is having a potluck of sorts for our last meeting. I was all set to make some veggie tuna salad for it. I didn’t believe that anyone in their right mind would ever stop making tuno. But and scouring both Wegmans and the crazy co-op here in Ithaca, I couldn’t find it!
I come back up to campus, and search the internet. I find references to tuno. The company that produced it: Natural Touch. I go to their website, and it redirects me to Morningstar Farms!
Coincidence? I THINK NOT. Morningstar AKA KELLOGG(!) must have bought out Natural Touch and stopped producing their amazing products.
FOR SHAME.
And now I can’t make my faux-tuna salad.
UPDATE: After navigating around Morningstar’s poor website, I happened upon a list of discontinued products. Among them:
Morningstar Farms® Tuno® Tuna Fish Substitute made with Vegetable Protein
And to add insult to injury, they re-branded it “Morningstar” before discontinuing it.

thank you for posting this blog entry. I haven’t been able to find Tuno since I moved from Modesto in 2008. I currently live in the SF Bay Area, and even here it’s not available.

Cedar Lake Foods makes a close substitute, called Vege-Tuna. I found it at the Adventist Book Center in Mt. Vernon, Ohio. I’ve been to their website and it’s not listed there (they haven’t updated it since 2004) but it DOES exist. I’ve been scouring the web for someplace that sells it online, because I can’t travel down to Mt. Vernon on a regular basis.

I to was looking for tuno, I did know who made the product and went right to the source. I was told no enough people were buying the product. I inturn said your marketing people were not doing a good enough job selling the product. I had been using it for years. Sorry to see it go and requested Tuno be reintroduced into the market place, to NO AVAIL!!!!!

Well, I’ve had a can of Tuno in my fridge for…gulp…a few years….maybe 3….and finally took it out and (still unopened) have been meaning to call the number on the can to see if it’s still edible. Do any of you Tuno lovers out there know how long it keeps? After hearing all this praise for Tuno, I sure wish I’d eaten it sooner!”
———————————————
David, if the can is not bloated or pierced, or rusted through, the product is edible, Canned foods with undamaged cans should last a very long time. That is why they put canned goods in bomb shelters.
If you think the can is punctured somewhere, you can empty out the can, and then fill it with water to see if it leaks.
Canned goods may lose some of their taste and texture past the expiration date, but they will not go bad for years. 20 years is a safe bet, but if the can is not damaged they can remain edible for much longer.
Here are a couple of links.

About twice a year I double check just in case tuno came back and I found this blog. Glad to know i’m not alone in missing tuno. I’m watching a cooking show with tuna cassarole right now and it’s bumming me out. Oh well maybe some day. I’ll keep crossing my fingers….

Gosh! I’ve been looking for Tuno for years. This explains it! We used to have tuno regularly and have been missing and searching for it everywhere. I’m going to start mailing morningstar farms regularly to ask them to start carrying it. I’m so glad I found this site, but really disappointed that tuno is no more.

My roommate has a can of Tuno still. Every time we are thinking of stuff to eat and see the can, he suggests it. I know cans last much longer but for some reason, reading those links makes me sorta want to try the Tuno now. I suggested selling it on eBay though. He said no. *shrug*

I too am a fan of Tuno. I live in Ohio and will make atrip to Mt Vernon to try the Cedar LAkes version. If it’s half as good it’ll be delicious

Hi – I did not realize there were so many people that were vegans and was looking for this product. Frozen Tuno Rolls were the best. I’ve had the can also and it was not that good, but the tuno roll was awesome, not for tuna salad but for putting in your gumbo to give it the fish taste, it was great. I really don’t understand why they would discontinue this product. With so many vegans today and people searching to eater better, I think it is a shame that we need to beg for food, not that you don’t pay for it because all the foods that are good for you you pay dearly for them. Everyone tells you that you need to eat healty but this is very discouraging when you look on the list especially those like Kelloggs, Worthington & Loma Linda because they are the ones that know about the Health Message as to how you should eat and their discontinuing list is larger than anyones. This is why a lot of people start out trying to be vegan and goes right back.
I sure hope someone would come up with the tuno roll that taste like the Worthington tuno roll. As for the tuna salad, I’ve found that at the ABC Bookstore in Atlanta and It really did not have a fish taste at all to me, I guess if I wanted it as a tuna salad, it might be ok, I don’t know. I don’t think that was discontinued because I just bought it about a month ago.

Just wanted to voice my shared disappointment of lack of Tuno on the shelves. Have you also noticed how much more expensive the products have become since the take over? And by the way Cedar Lake foods is no longer making their version either. Bummer.

Damn I’m going vegan and the fish is the last thing I am switching. Was really hoping to try tuno and find that it was the perfect substitute but looks like I’m SOL. With so many of the fish in the world being depleted I would think this product would be more in demand. Hope they start remaking it. Thanks for posting this!

Howdy!
Has anyone thought of boycotting the offending party(s)?

I very much miss Tuno as well. Seems all the products that I like were removed. A very very good vegetarian beef stew made by Worthington was discontinued too. They still make a good Chili product also available

I don’t buy the “it didn’t sell” thing. It was always sold out when I ordered it and I usually had to wait. It seems as if Morningstar Farms bought them out to eliminate competition for their products, because they didn’t adopt most of the other foods that were in the line. The original company that made Tuno made a lot of other products that were great, harder to find vegetarian options. Now that Morningstar Farms bought them, those products are gone too. I wrote to Quorn and asked them if they would develop a tuna substitute. If Morningstar Farms won’t release an option, then let’s encourage their competition to do so. In the meantime, those who have some cans in their pantry, could you please post the ingredients list here so we can maybe take a crack at trying to create our own version of it at home? Thanks!

I used to buy Tuno in my home state Puerto Rico! Even in normal supermarkets it was a success. Maybe the tuna makers pay them?
