“Cyber Storm” Occurs, Nothing Much Accomplished

‘Cyber Storm’ tests US defences

Vital US infrastructure including power grids and banking systems have been put under simulated attack in a week-long security exercise called Cyber Storm.

The war game drew in 115 agencies from the FBI and CIA to the Red Cross, the Department of Homeland Security said.

Sounds good… But wait, what’s this?

Cyber Storm reportedly not only tested against attacks by hackers, but also by bloggers – who deliberately spread misinformation in the exercise.

Oh, puh-leaze! First off, calling this a “war game” really makes war games a lot less cool. And blogs deliberately spreading misinformation? A few questions. What blogosphere are they talking about here? The idea of an organized disinformation campaign run entirely with blogs is ludicrous.

The primary problem with blogs and their information today, is their primary sources. And yes, that is the print and news media, in all of its failings.

Additionally, what can the government even do to prevent or combat such a theoretical? Post news briefings on whitehouse.gov to the contrary? I’d like to see exactly how this scenario played out. Just in the event that blogs in real life start disappearing because of “misinformation.”
