- small hotelroom with low standard. i agree: when i was in the usa i was quite impressed about the huge hotelrooms there. amazing. but just because you are spoiled in your country with that you cannot compare other countrys about the lower standard. you have much cheaper prices there for land and houses. here are the prices horrible because …. sorry that would be to much to explain. just believe me: the rooms are small to keep prices on a payable level. btw. never go to hongkong. hotelrooms are much more expensive and the rooms are smaller than a bathroom in a normal u.s. hotel. nothing for claustrophobic guys.

First, to clarify for the last time, this post from five years ago was an expression of my thoughts and experiences from various trips to Switzerland during my time abroad. I believe the realization of cultural differences (negative or positive) while traveling offers valuable insight (into the human experience, not any particular culture per say) to the traveler. The French are often perceived as being aloof and inhospitable (“chauvinism” having a French eponym and all); I would tend to attribute the same to the Swiss. These aren’t to be interpreted as material traits, but impressions from the outside. Accordingly, it’s puerile to get into a huff whenever someone might slight your country based on fleeting appearances – cite my brush off of the previous poster who assumed I was fat and slovenly.

Let’s put it another way: I’m aware of negative perceptions of Americans in the international community. I understand these as only popular perceptions of the culture, and not incontrovertible truths of every single American. So to, is my estimation of the Swiss.

I never pretended to display an accurate representation of Switzerland here – this was my personal reaction to personal events. But the fact that this singular post has gotten so many hits and comments suggests some resonance with others’ experiences. I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news here. This again is not a slight against the country or its people. (And I’ve never considered “Swiss” to be a race, precluding alleged racism on my part. In fact, any such splintered view of race as to consider the Swiss a separate distinguishable entity immediately raises red flags on my part. I subscribe little value in “racial” divides myself.)

Getting so worked up over one outsider’s perspective as to repeatedly come back (as opposed to commenting and then blowing it off) shows hypersensitivity, if not outright jingoism on your part. For anyone slighted here, I think a better use of time would be five minutes of honest reflection on cultural differences, as opposed to ad hominem rebuttals on some random blog that might break 50 unique hits a day (on a good day).
