US Investigates Fallujah Killing

US investigates Falluja killing

The US military is looking into whether an American marine in Falluja shot dead a severely wounded Iraqi insurgent at point-blank range.

Television footage shows US soldiers entering a building as injured prisoners lie on the floor.

The soldier, from the 3rd battalion of the US marines, has been removed from the field and faces possible charges.

The images were taken by an NBC reporter embedded with the US troops in the Sunni city under assault.

The first time I’ve seen any upside of “embedded reporters.” I truly have mixed feelings with forcing news reporters to be embedded with the troops. There is a very real, very dangerous possibility of gross censorship. Additionally, there are many a reporter who become overly obnoxious, if not downright dangerous, for the soldiers he’s embedded with.

On the other hand, though, they are probably a bit safer, and often the reporters will realize the intimate, human aspect of war – at least from the soldier’s perspective, that is.

US marines have been battling with sporadic but fierce pockets of resistance inside the city. They say they have already killed 1,200 insurgents.

It’s just a pity that none of these murders will ever be ‘investigated.’
